KAND Award Descriptions and Criteria
Affiliate Awards
Recognized Young Dietitian: Must be 35 years of age or less, a member of AND, and active participant in the national, state, or local association. Must not have previously received the award, demonstrate concern for the promotion of optimal health and nutrition status of the population, and demonstrate leadership in the Academy or in employment. LDN preferred.
Outstanding Dietetic Educator: Must be a member of AND, faculty with or preceptor in the ACEND-accredited and approved dietetics education program, demonstrate innovative teaching skills and techniques, demonstrate mentoring as documented by letters from students, and demonstrate leadership in the profession.
Outstanding Dietetic Student: Must be a member of AND (by January 1 of the year in which they receive the award), enrolled in an ACEND-accredited program, demonstrate academic achievement documented by letters from professors or preceptors, and demonstrate leadership and professional potential.
Outstanding Dietitian: Must be a LDN in Tennessee, active in or contributing to the field of dietetics and nutrition, an active participant in the national, state, or local association, not have previously received the award, demonstrate concern for the promotion of optimal health and nutrition status of the population, and demonstrate leadership in the Association or in employment.
Emerging Dietetic Leader: Must have been in practice for greater than 5 and less than 10 years. Must be a member of AND, an active participant in the national, state, or local Academy, not have previously received the Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year award, demonstrate concern for the promotion of optimal health and nutrition status of the population, and demonstrated leadership in the Academy or in employment. LDN preferred.
IRIS Award: Must NOT be an RD or a member of AND/TAND/KAND, must be known to Dietitians throughout the District, and must contribute to nutrition in one of the following ways: a) promoting the advancement of the field of nutrition through scientific knowledge or technical skills, b) demonstrating goodwill through notable service in furthering the advancement of dietetics and promoting its high standards through resourced, time, financial or personnel support, c) furthering the cultural growth of dietetics, or d) contributing to the public awareness of the field of dietetics.
Janet Buck Preceptor of the Year Award: Any DPD or DI Program director with an accredited program in Tennessee may nominate 1 preceptor for this award to their local dietetic association. Self-nominations will not be accepted. Preceptors considered for this award have demonstrated exemplary accomplishments of core preceptor responsibilities including: using innovative teaching skills and techniques to facilitate learning, acting as a mentor to elevate student learning and level of practice, and excellence in professional practice by engaging beyond membership in local, state, or national organizations, community organizations, workplace committees, public policy just as Janet Buck did so faithfully.
KAND Specific Awards
Charitable Community Nutrition Award: The recipient of this award must be a non-profit organization that aligns with KAND’s mission to promote optimal nutrition, health, and well-being in the community.
The Ellen Neal Scholarship (Given to the Outstanding Dietetic Student recipient): The purpose of the Ellen Neal Memorial Scholarship Award is to recognize dietetics students who demonstrate outstanding scholastic ability and professional potential. Ellen Neal was a long-time member of the Knoxville District Dietetic Association and served as its president. She completed both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at the University of Tennessee. Her career started in private practice and evolved into one of the premier nutrition consulting businesses in the Knoxville area. The scholarship committee will select one $500 award from all applications submitted.

AND Specific Awards
Description: TN Academy members are encouraged to nominate colleagues for the Academy’s professional practice awards. These include: Cooper, Copher, Medallion, Honorary Member, and ADAF Awards for Excellence in Practice.
